I had originally started this blog last year in May. I did about 4 posts and then dropped it. In reading back over them I noticed some negativity and I don't want my blog to come across that way at all - so they were deleted and I'm starting fresh! I am mainly starting it back up for The Great Sew-along but I would like to also post about my other sewing related activities and probably other stuff too. Maybe blogging will help me be more productive. Since I started sewing garments again last year, I am already wondering what pattern I used for that tan linen skirt, etc. So if I document it here maybe it will help my fading memory - ha!
I am participating in Marji's great coat sew-along and am so excited. Many thanks to her and all the other experts she has offering their assistance. I am so excited to start on this fun project! Here are my plans so far:
First (and this is not part of the sew-along) I am making Burda 117 from 2/2008. This is a trench that Laura has made and graciously shared pictures and tips on her blog (scroll down to 2/11). It is so cute. I have a deep spruce crinkle taffeta to use for this. The pattern has been traced onto pattern tissue and I have adjusted it to a tall. I stitched up the tissue and it looks good enough to start a muslin. I purchased a heavier muslin that will hopefully drape close to what the actual fabric will drape. So today I am cutting the muslin. I have no plans for the weekend so it will be spent sewing. Whoo hoo! Well, cleaning and some cooking on Monday. I have everything I need for this project except the snaps.
Second, and this is part of the sew-along, I am using a black mohair purchased from Kashi/Metro Textiles last year to make V2884. I did find a dark batiste to use for the underlining but I need to purchase the pattern. The Vogue patterns will be on sale next weekend at Hancock's so hopefully they will have it. If not I will order online. Then I need to find haircanvas. I have searched the internet and found it priced anywhere from $7-8 up to $30. That's a wide range people! I don't want fusible, it will need to be sew in. I think some recommendations have just been posted on the coat sew-along blog so I need to check those out and get some ordered.
Third, and this is coat #2 on the sew-along, I will be working on a trench, Simplicity 4084. I purchased Burberry fabric last year from an online source (don't remember now which one) but it was advertised as Burberry. It is solid black on one side and a black/tan plaid on the other side. I have been afraid to start on this since it is a heavier fabric and I have never sewn on this type of fabric before. But Kathryn from SG is lending her expertise on the sew-along and she has a lot of experience with trench coats and has posted some tips on Stitcher's Guild for working with this type of fabric. So it's now or never for me with this fabric and pattern. I will listen to all the experts and do the best I can. My fear is that it will look homemade but if I don't take advantage of the sew-along, then I probably would just let this fabric sit and age in my stash.
I need to get this pattern out and tissue fit because we start on the muslin in June. Hopefully I can do that this weekend.
I hope everyone has a great weekend and we all accomplish a lot! Above is a picture of our side yard. Now to figure out where the picture will post :)
